This download includes two activities which can be used together. These resources enable learners to use their knowledge of the sounds s a t p i n to match initial sounds (graphemes) with the corresponding picture AND word (resource 1). Once these 'sound/word/picture' jigsaw puzzles have been completed learners can use their knowledge of Phase 2/3 sounds to write these words (resource 2).
Who’s it for?
This resource set has been designed for early years children, pupils in year one as well as older students needing additional learning support.
Resource Details
This set includes two complementary resources designed to reinforce Phase 2 and 3 phonics.
Resource 1:
This is a set of three-part jigsaw puzzles for the sounds s, a, t, p, i, and n. Each puzzle piece includes a picture (e.g., sun, ant, train, plant, ink, nest) that matches a corresponding grapheme and word. A tick on each puzzle piece indicates that the word can be sounded out.
Resource 2:
This is a writing resource with two differentiated sheets...
- Page 1 provides more support by showing a specific number of lines for each word, indicating the number of sounds.
- Page 2 offers less support with only a single line per word. Red letters or lines on this resource highlight tricky sounds that learners might need help with, such as the ‘i’ sound in ‘planets’.
- Page 3 is an answer sheet.
How to use it
For Resource 1, an adult should print the puzzles onto card and cut along the dotted lines. Learners will then match the grapheme to the corresponding word and picture. These puzzles can be used to help learners practice sounding out words and prepare them for Resource 2.
For Resource 2, learners will practice sounding out and writing the words from the pictures in Resource 1. This resource is differentiated, allowing you to choose between the more or less supported writing sheet based on your learners’ needs.
