x16 landscape orientation pdf sheets for all Phase 2 phonics sounds, which are s a t p i n m d g o c k ck e b r u h f ff l ll ss. There are x4 sound sets, each with x3 sheets containing x6/x5 cards to cut out plus an answer sheet for every set.

What's it for?

This ‘Phase 2’ phonics practise activity set has been designed practise sounding out and writing simple words using all and only sounds in Phase 2. Sets have been designed to be used in the order that 'new' sounds are introduced to learners.

Who’s it for?

This resource has been designed for Early Years children/pupils in Year 1 who are just learning these sounds for the first time or who need some practise/reinforcement of these sounds. This resource is also ideal for older pupils with additional learning needs who need to revisit these sounds.

How to use it?

An adult cuts along the dotted lines and places one (colour) set of x6 word cards or all x23 word cards on a table top - depending on the needs of your learner/s. Learners look at an image on the left, sound it out and write the graphemes for each word on the lines (on the right). Visual answer sheets (for all sets) are included, which learners can use themselves to encourage autonomy.

  • Red (Set 1) Includes words which contain the sounds s, a, t, p, i, n and 'e'

s - stamp a - ant t - tap p - pan i - ink n - nest (contains ‘e’ - introduced in set 3)

  • Orange (Set 2) Includes words which contain the sounds s, a, t, p, i, n, m, d, g, o, c, k plus 'e' and 'f'

m - map d - dog g - gift (contains ‘f’ ‘ introduced later, with set 4) o - octagon (although this is a longer word it can be sounded out using sounds from sets 1 and 2. IF learners know this 2D shape. Pronunciation of the ‘a’ and second ‘o’ (in 'octagon') may vary e.g. as an ‘uh’ sound and confuse learners so is ‘red’ to identify that this grapheme may be tricky and learners may need help with this

c - cat k - kit (e.g. football/PE kit)

  • Yellow (Set 3) Includes words which contain the sounds s, a, t, p, i, n, m, d, g, o, c, k, ck, e, b, r, u, h and 'f' ck - duck (first ‘end’ sound here so may catch out some learners) e - egg (double ‘gg’ may be an issue though of course the ‘g’ letters together only have one ‘g’ sound) u - up (escalator - arrow indicates this) r - rat (not to be confused with ‘mouse’ !) h - hen (not to be confused with ‘chicken’ !) b - bag

  • Green (Set 4) Includes words which contain all the sounds in Phase 2.

f - frog ff - daffodil (‘middle’ sound may catch out some learners) Learners will need to know this particular flower or may just associate this image with ‘flower’ (for ‘f’. In addition the ‘o’ is ‘red’ as some may pronounce this sound as ‘u’ or ‘a’) l - lemon (the ‘o’ is ‘red’ as some may pronounce this sound as ‘u’) ll - bell (‘end’ sound may catch out some learners) ss - grass (‘end’ sound may catch out some learners)
