Maths activity: A hands-on painting task exploring doubles by printing paint spots onto butterflies.

Suitability: Early years and primary students learning addition and number doubles.

Materials needed: Paint, cotton buds or fingers for dabbing, and scissors (optional).
Step-by-Step Instructions

Prepare the sheet: Learners write their name (and date) in the designated spaces on the page. Dashed lines indicate where to cut if you wish to separate the pairs of butterflies.

Examine the butterflies: Each sheet features two butterflies ordered in rainbow sequence from numbers 1 to 10. Notice the pale dots on the left wing, which represent one part of a double.

Dab the paint: Carefully dab paint onto each pale spot on the left wing.

Fold and Reveal: Fold the butterfly in half firmly along the dashed centre line while the paint is still wet, then open it back up to reveal the symmetrical double on the right wing.

Count and complete: Count the total number of spots now visible across both wings, then complete the written sentence below the butterfly (for example, 'Double 1 is 2.').
