This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in years one as well as students needing additional learning support.

What’s it for?

This Phase 2 Alphabet Farm set is designed to help young learners practise their alphabet and phonic knowledge by matching grapheme cards with farm themed images and/or corresponding farm themed words.

How to use this resource?

An adult cuts out the square letter (grapheme) picture and word cards (pages 1 - 4) following dotted lines. The cards can then be shuffled and placed on a table top for learners to match. There are various ways to use this resource, suggestions are included below.

Learners can engage in three main matching activities:

• Grapheme-to-picture match: Match the letter (grapheme) card (e.g., 'd') to the picture card of an animal/object that starts with that sound (e.g., 'dog' or 'ducks'). This reinforces initial sound recognition (e.g., 'b' for bull, 'c' for cat, 'd' for dog/ducks etc.)
• Image-to-word match: Match a picture to its word card. We include two word cards per image: one plain and one with phoneme dots (sound dots) for extra support.
• Full set match: Match all the cards together (the letter, the picture, and the two word card options) to form a complete set.

Building/extending vocabulary The list included provides multiple animals for some letters (e.g., 'p' includes pick, pig and pond). The cards could be used to prompt discussion about other words that start with the same letter.

The list of the alphabet pictures makes clear what is included, though as this resource is focused on Phase 2 there is not an image for every alphabet letter.
