This resource has been designed to encourage learners to investigate the lines of symmetry for all x26 capital letters of the alphabet!

Who’s it for?

This resource has been designed for pupils in the early years, years one and two as well as older students who would benefit from investigating the concept of ‘symmetry’ and ‘symmetrical’ or students needing additional learning support.

How to use it?

This resource helps learners investigate lines of symmetry. They should first cut out each capital letter, then fold it to find a solid line of symmetry. A safety mirror can also be used to double-check their findings, especially if a letter has already been cut.

Learners will need a pair of scissors each to begin this activity.

This resource guides learners through a practical investigation to determine which capital letters are symmetrical and which are not.

Part 1: Hands-On Investigation (Pages 1 & 2)

(Materials needed: Scissors, Glue Stick, Pencil)

Page 1 + Learners cut out larger capital letters (at the top of the page) and fold them to physically test for lines of symmetry.. After investigating, these pieces can be discarded.

• Smaller capital letters: (along the bottom of the page) can be used to record findings (on Page 2). This creates a reference resource.

Page 2 Where answers/findings are recorded

• Glue the letters that are symmetrical onto the left side

• Glue the letters that are not symmetrical onto the right side.

Part 2: Teacher/Student Reference (Pages 3 & 4)

• Page 3 provides a, completed version of the resource for quick reference.
• Page 4 is the answer key, showing the correct classification of all letters, including the actual lines of symmetry.
• Differentiation Note: Page 4 can also be used as a support - allowing learners to trace the existing lines of symmetry, practicing folding and exploring the concept with guidance.
