Phase 2 'f ff l ll ss' Grapheme/Picture Match: Reading CVC Words (Set 4/4)
This resource contains 3 PDF files.
Summary
This activity is designed to help young learners solidify their recognition of the last five Phase 2 graphemes (f, ff, l, ll, ss) by strengthening their understanding of the written letter (grapheme) and its corresponding sound (phoneme) within a word as well as providing opportunity to sound out and reading matching CVC words, using the Word Boards provided.
Description
What’s included?
x5 sheets (x2 portrait, and x3 landscape orientation), PDF format.
What's it for?
This hands-on phonics activity develops two core skills: grapheme-phoneme correspondence and phoneme blending. Learners match picture and grapheme cards, then read CVC words displayed on the Word Boards. Words include phoneme dots for clear segmenting.
Who’s it for?
Designed for Early Years children learning Phase 2 phonics, Year 1 pupils requiring reinforcement and adaptable for older learners who need to revisit these sounds.
Phonic Progression (Set-by-Set)
This activity is structured into four progressive sets (red, orange, yellow, green) to ensure learning is steady and successful. Each set builds directly on the last, allowing children to continuously practise previously learned sounds while only introducing a few new ones at a time. Sets 1 and 2 introduce a single sound from the next set to increase the variety of CVC words available, while consolidating knowledge. The final set uses sounds from all sets.
This set (Set 4) focuses on the last five sounds - f, ff, l, ll, ss. The pictures/words included use these five sounds as well as i (Set 1), g, o, c, k (Set 2) and e, u, b (Set 3).
How to use it?
Learners match each letter (grapheme) card with its picture. Learners then place these pairs on the correct 'Word Board' and sound out the corresponding CVC words.
Answers
Grapheme/picture answers are included in a clear format, enabling learners to check their own matches and work independently.
