Summary

This resource is designed for end-of-Phase 2 assessment and consolidation. Crucially, the check includes two differentiated levels (More Support and Less Support) so you can easily choose the appropriate challenge level for every learner.

Description

What’s included?

x6 sheets, portrait (x4)/landscape(x2) orientation, pdf format.

What’s it for?

These differentiated checks are designed for use at the end of Phase 2 Phonics to practise and assess whether learners can segment and accurately write VC/CVC words using the complete set of sounds taught.

Who is this resource for?

This resource is for learners in Reception once all Phase 2 sounds have been introduced. It is also an ideal tool for Year 1 consolidation or for supporting older pupils with additional learning needs who require targeted phonics intervention.

  • Early Years/Reception: Learners who have been introduced to the full set of Phase 2 phonemes and are ready to consolidate their knowledge.

  • Year 1 Teachers: To use as an effective revision or consolidation tool at the beginning of the year or for ongoing review.

  • SEN/Intervention: Older pupils who require revisiting or catching up on foundational Phase 2 CVC segmenting skills.

How to Use the Resource

This activity requires learners to segment the sounds they hear in a word and write the corresponding letters (graphemes). For each picture shown on the left, the learner should say the word and then write the letters for each sound they can hear onto the dashed lines provided on the right.

Resource Details

This resource has been designed with two levels of difficulty, indicated by the icon at the lower, right corner. This allows flexible use in the classroom, for intervention/SEN, as homework.

The level of support is clearly indicated by an icon in the bottom-right corner of the sheet. Answer sheets are included for both resources - in the same format, encouraging learners to check their work independently.

Crucially, all pictures and words included in this check can be segmented and written only using phonemes within Phase 2.

Phase 2 Colour Key

The boxes outlining each picture/word are colour-coded linking to the order that the Phase 2 phonemes are introduced:

  • Red: s,a,t,p,i,n
  • Orange: m,d,g,o,c,k
  • Yellow: ck,e,b,r,u,h
  • Green: f,ff,l,ll,ss
Resource 1: Lower Challenge, More Support

This version is designed to provide more support for learners. Below the writing lines for each word, colour-coded phoneme dots are included. These dots act as a visual prompt, clearly indicating:

  • The exact number of phonemes (sounds) within the word.

  • The Phase 2 phonics group each sound belongs to, linking to the colour key (included at the top of both sheets).

This resource is for learners who are consolidating their segmenting skills.

Resource 2: Higher Challenge, Less Support

This resource offers a higher challenge as the writing lines are provided without the colour-coded phoneme dots.

This version requires learners to segment the sounds independently. It is best used for learners who are already confident in their knowledge of Phase 2 phonics, their ability to sound out CVC words, and record the corresponding graphemes in writing.

The words included are as follows:

  • sap
  • ant
  • tap
  • pan
  • imp
  • nip
  • map
  • dog
  • gum
  • on
  • cod
  • kit
  • duck
  • egg
  • bud
  • red
  • up
  • hug
  • fob
  • cuff
  • leg
  • bell
  • kiss
Suggestion

These sheets could be laminated and used as a table top activity for learners to access independently using a wipe clean pen.
