Summary

Learners sound out CVC words using sounds only within Phase 2 (s a t p i n m d g o c k ck e b r u h f ff l ll s) then check to see if they are correct, promoting autonomy. When printed onto card with the end section folded back the cards ‘stand up’ on a table top, inviting learners to come over and explore, giving the activity a more interactive feel.

Description

What’s included?

x12 sheets for all Phase 2 sounds, in landscape in orientation, pdf format.

What’s it for?

These activity sets are designed to practise and reinforce reading VC and CVC words using only the sounds taught in Phase 2 phonics.

Each set follows the learning order; while Set 1 only uses its introduced sounds, subsequent sets build cumulatively, incorporating sounds only from the previous sets.

Who’s it for?

This resource has been designed for Early Years children who are just learning these sounds for the first time, pupils in Year 1 who need some practise/reinforcement of these sounds. This resource is also ideal for older learners who need to revisit these sounds.

How to use it?

For a more durable resource, print these onto card instead of paper.

Preparing the Word Cards
  • Cut out each card along the dotted lines.
  • Fold the last section of each card backwards along the dashed lines. This will hide the image behind the word.
  • Place the cards on a table. The folded section will allow them to stand up, making the activity more interactive.
How to Use the Word Cards

Learners look at the graphemes to sound out and read the word on the card. They can then check if they were correct by looking at the hidden image folded back.
