Description

What’s included?

x15 pages, landscape orientation, pdf format.

What’s it for?

This resource focuses on x13 prepositions:

  • above
  • below
  • in front of
  • behind
  • inside
  • in
  • out
  • outside
  • next to
  • beside
  • by
  • to the left of
  • to the right of

Learners place a digger in the correct position according to each preposition word label at the top (above) each rocky 'scene sheet'.

Who’s it for?

This resource has been designed for children in the early years (depending on understanding/ability), years 1 and 2 as well as older learners needing to revisit/explore these prepositions further.

Preparation
  1. Print out the set of x15 sheets
  2. Laminate 'scene sheets' (pages 2-15) including 'Answers' sheet (page 15)
  3. Cut up the diggers on page 1)
  4. Laminate diggers
  5. Cut out and separate diggers, ensure corners are 'rounded' and smooth
  6. Add a small dot of blue tac to the back of each digger card (optional)

How to use this resource

Place laminated sheets (pages 2-14) with cut out and laminated digger images together on a table top/carpet for learners to access. Learners take a digger image and place in the correct position as the preposition word label on each 'scene sheet' indicates.

Answers (page 15)

Answers are provided as a 'guide', however these may vary for some prepositions, e.g. 'beside' can be 'either' side. Your learner/s should be encouraged to explain their thinking.

This Answer sheet can also be laminated and made available to learners to check their own learning once the activity (placing one digger on each scene sheet), encouraging autonomy.

Suggestion

A tiny ball of blue tac could be secured to the back of each digger image to keep learners placement in position once they have completed this activity.

Giving learners access to a toy diggers with a 'pit' to place the diggers down and inside of (as well as outside, above, next to etc), is recommended to explore before working on this activity. Having access to these real objects should help make clear how an object (digger) looks when placed e.g. 'in' a pit, ready to complete this activity.
