Learners explore x16 prepositions through two cut/stick activity options. Answers are included in the same layout to promote autonomous learning.
Description
What’s included?
x3 pages, landscape orientation, pdf format.
What’s it for?
This resource focuses on x16 prepositions:
- above
- behind
- below
- beside
- between
- inside
- in front of
- to the left of
- next to
- off
- on
- outside
- over
- to the right of
- through
- under
Learners cut out a tennis ball/word label and match with the correct position/image for the x16 prepositions listed (above).
Who’s it for?
This resource has been designed for children in the early years (depending on understanding/ability), years 1 and 2 as well as older learners needing to revisit/explore these prepositions further.
Preparation
Each learners needs:
- either page 1 or 2
- access to page 3 Answer sheet (when finished)
- a pencil (to write their name and the number date)
- a pair of scissors
- a glue stick
How to use this resource
Page 1
Learners write their name and the number date (top, right). Learners cut out one preposition 'word label' at a time (following dotted lines) and place this label with the matching image. Once happy that these match learners can secure each word label with a glue stick.
Page 2
Learners write their name and the number date (top, right). Learners cut out one tennis ball at a time (see base of the sheet) and place each tennis ball as the label for each box image indicates. The round shape of some tennis balls will need to be cut into to best show the prepositions, for example 'behind' and 'under'. See 'Answers' (page 3) for clarification of this.
Page 3 - Answers
Answers are provided as a guide, however these may vary for some prepositions, e.g. 'beside' can be 'either' side. Your learner/s should be encouraged to explain their thinking.
This Answer sheet can be made available to learners to check their own learning once the activity the have been working on (page 1/2) is complete, encouraging autonomy.
Suggestions
Learners could explore this activity first using a tiny ball of blue tac/a round 'counter'. While they won't be able to place these items 'under' or 'behind' the box images having a real object may help them better visualise the different prepositions included.
In addition/alternatively giving learners access to a real, 3D box and tennis ball (to scale of images shown) is recommended to explore before working on this cut/stick activity. Having access to these real objects should also help make clear how an object (tennis ball) looks when placed e.g. 'under' and (partially) 'behind' the box etc.
