J is for... What begins with the letter 'j'?

What’s included?

This download includes three pdf sheets, portrait, in colour/black and white featuring ten images that all begin with the j sound.

The j images can be matched to reinforce knowledge of the j sound as well as ordering the images to make a miniature Jj book (included).

Who’s it for?

This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in years one as well as older students needing additional learning support.

What’s it for?

This resource is to reinforce learners knowledge of the j sound and recognition of the grapheme j. The images on pages 1 and 2 can be used to be a matching activity/play a matching game - matching items with the same initial (j) sound. Learners can also use their knowledge of the alphabet to order pictures to make a miniature Jj book.

This resource is designed to be used by itself, however as other sets are available different sounds could be combined and presented to learners for them to sort according to which initial sound the different (mixed) images have.

How to use it?

Print sheets onto paper. Pages 1 and 2 can be used in different ways (see below) - they can also be used with page 3 to make a mini-book (simple instructions for this are included). To make the mini-book scissors and a glue stick are needed. Once the book is made either the colour set of words/images (page 1) OR the black and white set of words/images (page 2) can be cut and ordered alphabetically and then stuck into the miniature book (page 3) - one word/image per page.

Page 1

This is the colour version of words/images which all begin with j. These can be cut up (dotted lines guide where to cut) and used as a matching activity or in the mini-book included (page 3).

Page 2

This is the black and white version of page 1 but in addition this page includes the outline of each word with a starting dot for each letter - encouraging learners to write the word for each image themselves. Learners can colour these images.

Pages 1 and 2

These two pages could be used together as two sets of cards to play a pairs/matching game, for this these pages would be better printed onto card (so that the images cannot be seen through the back as would be the case if using paper). Page 1 could be the 'cards' (cut up) and page 2 the 'board' to match the cards to (or vice versa).

Page 3

This sheet includes 10 pages to make one mini-book. Instructions for how to assemble this mini book are included on the sheet itself. The images from either page 1 or page 2 are to be added to the pages of this mini-book, designed to be organised in alphabetical order, as listed below.
