This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in year one as well as older students needing additional learning support.

What’s it for?

This matching resource helps learners practise counting up to ten items (spots!) using one-to-one correspondence as well as building up their on-sight recognition of numerals from 0 to 10. Using cards learners either match the number of spots shown on the ladybirds/numerals from 0 to 10 with the numerals (0 to 10) or number of ladybird spots displayed on the 'matching mats'.

How to use this resource

1. Choose the challenge level The two 'Matching mats' (for each activity) can be laminated back-to-back so are always to hand. If your learner needs to switch to a more supported/more challenging version, simply flip the mat over.

Select the mat (level) that best suits your learner's current confidence level:

• Lower level (green border): This mat offers the most support and least challenge as the numerals are arranged sequentially, in order.
• Higher level (red border): This mat offers least support and most challenge as the numerals are not arranged sequentially, but are organised in random order.

2. Decide the learning focus

a. Learners match the cards showing ladybirds with a number of spots on their back (from 0 up to 10) with the numerals (0-10) displayed on the 'Matching mats'.

b. Learners match numerals (0-10) shown on the number cards to the ladybird images (their number of spots) displayed on the 'Matching Mats'.

This download includes both, however both sets are available seperately if preferred:

3. Prepare the resource

There are two steps to prepare each resource:

• Preparing the 'Matching Cards' (ladybird spots/numerals)
• Printing and laminating the 'Matching Mats' (back-to-back is one option to keep these together, in one place, or mats can be laminated separately).

Matching Cards

• Print sheet onto card
• Cut out the 'Ladybirds Spot Cards 1-10' AND/OR the 'Number Matching cards 1-10'
• Laminate each set of cards (for increased durability)
• Cut out each set of cards again
• Shuffle each set of cards
• Match cards to the matching mats either the 'Ladybird Spot Cards' to the 'Number Matching Mats' AND/OR 'Ladybird Number Matching Cards' to 'Ladybird Spot Mats'.

Matching Mats

• Print onto card
• Laminate mats, either back-to-back OR separately (whichever works best for you).
