Who’s it for?
This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in year one as well as older students needing additional learning support.
What’s it for?
This matching resource helps learners practise counting up to twenty items (dots) using one-to-one correspondence as well as building up their on-sight recognition of numerals from 1 to 20. Learners match the number of dots shown on the snake's circles (on the Snake mat) with the numerals (1 to 20) displayed on the circle cards.
How to use this resource
1. Choose the challenge level The two 'Matching mats' can be laminated back-to-back so are always to hand. If your learner needs to switch to a more supported/more challenging version simply flip the mat over.
Select the mat that best suits your learner's current confidence level:
- Level 1 (Green snake): This mat offers the most support and least challenge as the number of dots are arranged sequentially, in order and are rainbow coloured, limiting the number of potential options for learners.
- Level 2 (Red border): This mat offers least support and most challenge as the number of dots are not arranged sequentially, but are organised in random order and are all red, meaning the correct match could be any of the circle number cards.
2. Decide the learning focus Learners match the circle cards showing numerals from 1 up to 20 with the number of dots (between 1 and 20) displayed on the 'Snake mats'.
3. Prepare the resource There are two steps to prepare this resource:
- Preparing the 'Matching Cards' (numerals from 1 - 20)
- Laminating the 'Matching Mats' (back-to-back is one option to keep these together, in one place, or mats can be laminated separately).
Matching Cards
- Print sheet onto card
- Cut out 'Circle Number Cards 1-20'
- Laminate cards (for increased durability)
- Cut out cards again
- Shuffle cards
- Match the 'Number Cards' to the number of spots on the 'Snake Mat'
Snake Mats
- Print onto card
- Laminate mats, either back-to-back OR separately (whichever works best for you).
If you would prefer your learner to practise recognising number names from 'one' to 'twenty' please also see this resource: Snakes! Matching numerals (1-20) and number names (one to twenty) Two levels .
