What it is for?

This hands-on maths and science activity set helps learners develop measurement (length), sequencing, and data comparison skills through the visual exploration of 60 common UK bird species. By comparing, ordering, or pairing individual small bird cards with the ordering strips, learners can visually sort UK bird species by length, from the tiny Goldcrest (9 cm) all the way up to the Mute Swan (150 cm).

How the two resources work together

Small bird cards

Sixty cards, each featuring an image of a common UK bird along with information regarding its length range (lower left) and average species length (lower right). These serve as interactive cards for comparing, ordering, sorting, matching, and nature study.

Connectable ordering strips

• Flexible physical setup: Pages 1 to 4 include strips that can be joined together to compare the full set of 60 birds across a carpet or long table. Alternatively, shorter segments can easily be assembled to suit smaller tabletop spaces or small group work.
• Tailored differentiation: Assembling a shorter strip allows you to adapt the task to your learners' current stage of development. Starting with a smaller selection of cards builds confidence, keeps visual comparison focused and accessible, and provides a gentle stepping stone as children progress.

Once bird cards are positioned in a line, learners can make clear, side-by-side size comparisons.

Comparative sorting mats

• Targeted vocabulary support: Page 5 provides three mats featuring clear directional prompts including shortest/longest and shorter/longer to guide left-to-right sequencing and reinforce key mathematical language.
• Progressive challenge levels: Allows you to easily adjust difficulty to match learner confidence. Learners can begin with a simple two-card comparison using comparative language including shortest/longest and shorter/longer, before advancing to sorting up to five bird cards across the top (longest) mat (on page 5)

Resource instructions and answer reference

Full, clear instructions of how to use this resource are included on the last page (page 5/6) of both downloads. Also included is a list of all birds included in order of size to help keep track of cards included in the set and their order (by size/length). These can both be printed and laminated and stored with the resource as a reference.
