This download is for x10 portrait orientation, PDF format sheets.

This includes x5 sets of x20 cards, focusing on the sounds a, e, i, o, u. (x10 pictures and x10 words per set).

What’s it for?

This phonics activity enables learners to sound out graphemes to read CVC words (all containing the a/e/i/o/u sounds) and match them with the corresponding pictures. Each set has been designed to be a simple, predictable activity to promote independence and consolidate learning. It is ideal for individuals or groups to complete independently.

Who’s it for?

This resource is suitable for early years children, year one pupils, and older learners who require focused phonics support and consolidation.

How to use it?

How to use it?

1. An adult needs to print the sheets (onto card stock) and pre-cut the cards into rectangles, dotted lines guide where to cut.

2. The set/s of cards can then be placed on a carpet/table top, for learners to use on their own/with adult support.

3. Learners read each CVC word by sounding out the individual graphemes featured.

4. Phoneme ‘dots’ have been included under every grapheme so that learners know how many sounds to say as they read (sound out) the words.

5. Learners then match each word to its corresponding picture from the set.

Resource details

Each CVC vowel set is printed in a different colour to prevent cards from becoming mixed up, as well as supporting learners in selecting the correct matching pair.

The words/pictures included feature sounds mainly from Phase 2. Sounds from Phase 3 are identified below.
