This flexible resource helps learners develop capital/uppercase letter recognition, initial sounds, and alphabetical order. With built-in differentiation, ranging from supportive colour-coded (rainbow) borders to independent grey layouts, it easily adapts to each child's needs. Use it with the included printable counters, or up-cycle plastic milk bottle tops to make tactile counters - ideal for younger learners! Instructions for up-cycling included.

How to use this resource

1. Choose your challenge level

Select the mat that best matches your learner's current confidence level:

• Level 1 (Green): alphabetical order with supportive rainbow borders.
• Level 2 (Grey): alphabetical order with plain grey borders to reduce visual prompts.
• Level 3 (Rainbow Random): randomly ordered mats with rainbow border support.
• Level 4 (Grey Random): randomly ordered mats with plain grey borders for the ultimate challenge.

2. Decide your learning focus

This resource works both ways! You can choose to have learners match letters to images or images to letters depending on the skills you want to practice.

3. Pick your counters

Prepare your pieces using one of three flexible options:

• Cover-discs: print, laminate, and cut out the blank rainbow or grey circles to play hide-and-reveal games on the mats.
• Printable counters: print, laminate, and cut out the matching letter or image circles.
• Tactile counters: follow the included guide to stick the letters or images onto recycled plastic milk bottle tops for a hands-on, sensory experience.

4. Foster independent learning

Laminate and place the included Answers / Reference sheet nearby. This allows learners to self-check their work autonomously, building confidence and independence!
