Description

What’s included?

x1 portrait orientation, pdf sheet with x12 cards to read and match.

Who’s it for?

Ideal for Early Years (Reception) learning to blend CVC words and Year 1 needing consolidation. Its clear, tactile card-matching format also makes it perfect for learners with additional needs.

What’s it for?

The CVC word and picture cards included, are the third of four sets which together systematically cover the Phase 2 phonics sounds. This set focuses on the sounds ck e b r u h.

The main purpose of the whole set is to help children master the essential skill of blending sounds together to read real words and understand their meaning through a fun, practical matching activity.

How to use it?
Preparation

Print cards onto sturdy card and cut out following the dotted lines.

Activity

Learners match the 'word' card to the 'picture' card. While suitable for independent revision, adult support is highly recommended initially. This allows new words (e.g., 'beck', 'ebb') to be introduced and discussed, effectively expanding vocabulary and challenging context understanding.

Yellow Set

Only uses the sounds ck, e, b, r, u, h

The words included are as follows:

  • beck (a tiny stream/river)
  • buck (male deer)
  • hub (central point e.g. on a wheel)
  • rub (action used to remove a mark/stain)
  • ruck (rugby term when teams become grouped)
  • ebb (double 'b' - may need support) (when the sea level on the beach becomes lower)

Sound Progression

When used together the words within the four sets align with Phase 2 order. Crucially, Sets 1-3 are sound-contained, using only the six sounds per set for focused blending practice. Set 4 covers f, ff, l, ll, ss, incorporating earlier vowels/consonants for full Phase 2 consolidation.
